De-Icer Aerator Anode
Summer 2018 is certainly characterized by high temperatures, well assisted by a series of beautiful sunny days (even if the bad weather did not fail to be felt occasionally). Who is already on holiday is obviously happy with all this, but you can not say the same as those who work in a company with a foundry next door, no? Can you blame us if our mind wanders to cool snowy expanses?
The anode we are talking about today is a very special product that is not installed on the boats, but still serves to protect them indirectly. We are talking about the Anode for Areatore De-Icer, a product that is very common in the United States, but that is slowly expanding in other markets too.
On the other hand, the passion for "private" ponds has taken hold first of all in America. Here it is not unusual for a company or a family to have a private pool of more or less large (and more or less inhabited) water next to their property. Like many other American habits, however, this also ended up being exported to other countries and now it is not unusual to find "personal" ponds even in Italy.
The De-Icer are therefore born to remedy the damage that the low temperatures and the freezing could cause to these pools of water, but with the advance of the technology they were then implemented in other fields. A series of well-placed De-Icer can protect a pier and a boat moored to it from ice damage. Furthermore, these accessories can fight stagnant water, keeping it cleaner and healthier, not to mention the environmental benefits. This is the case of the movie Big Miracle, inspired by a fact that actually happened when three whales were saved from the ice in which they were blocked thanks to some De-Icer. But how does a De-Icer work? In practice this is nothing but a propeller that is submerged at a certain depth where the water is warmer. Once the propeller is activated, the water is pushed on the surface in order to prevent or eliminate the formation of ice and all the unpleasant consequences that this brings to a pier or a boat. The water is kept in motion and does not stagnate on site thus avoiding the formation of unpleasant odors or marine vegetation. Furthermore, the current thus formed, if placed strategically, can also prevent the accumulation of rubbish and debris. You can find more information on the operation in the following video: here.
If you have been following us for a while, it is logical to understand why it is vital to protect a De-Icer from galvanic corrosion. The propellers that push the current are in fact submerged and are not so different from those of a boat. In order to guarantee its best functioning, it is therefore important that the sacrificial anodes that take care of cathodic protection are adequately monitored and replaced as they are consumed. A concept often underestimated, also because the De-Icer is an accessory that is used by a very large audience that sometimes does not even know what a sacrificial anode is.
