Save Our Ocean - A Bracelet to Save the Ocean

Two weeks ago we talked about the One Ocean Foundation, but this is not the only foundation/association that deals with fighting marine microplastic pollution. Among the most active in the cleaning of the seas is also the 4ocean which, here in Italy, is supported in its activity also by Guidi srl. Also considering our presence at the Versilia Yachting Rendezvous with a stand dedicated to this theme, what better topic than this for today's Save Our Ocean?

Before starting, I remind you that you can find a list of the articles in this series, constantly updated and ordered according to thematic categories, by visiting this index.

Andrew Cooper and Alex Schulze, the two founders of 4ocean

Two Friends, A Passion, An Idea

The 4ocean story begins with Andrew Cooper and Alex Schulze, two friends who shared a passion for surfing, intent on traveling to Bali, Indonesia. A journey which would forever change their lives and the fate of the ocean. Their trip took them to touch the devastating amount of plastic that polluted the ocean. They tried to understand why no one was doing something to solve the problem.

Then one afternoon they met a village on the coast where the fishermen were literally forced to push their boats through stacks of plastic dragged along by the current. Plastic pollution was not just threatening the marine environment, but also the survival of those fishermen. Yet, none of them used fishing nets to collect plastic, thus releasing the environment and improving their situation. The market demand for fresh fish pushed the fishermen to concentrate on what they had before their eyes, the fish, not allowing them to understand that if they had not collected the plastic, it would eventually destroyed their whole life.

The two friends realized that they had to create something concrete that fed the desire to clean the ocean. Thus was born the 4ocean bracelet. This is a simple, as unique, bracelet, made with a colored spaghetti in which transparent glass beads are strung. Its peculiarity is however that of being completely made of recycled materials that come from the same plastic and glass bottles that are recovered from the oceans. A huge cleaning campaign that sustains itself financially.

A bracelet for a pound

4ocean states that, for each bracelet sold, the consideration for a pound of garbage is removed. The total amount of dirt removed reached at the time I am writing these lines (the figure it is automatically updated on the site with every purchase) is 4 million and 399.512 pounds. All in less than two years. An enormous result that testifies to the power of the idea had by the two surfer friends, but that would not have been possible without the support of a whole network of volunteers ready to take action on the waters and coasts of the USA, Caribbean, Canada and Indonesia.

Armed with nets, trucks and boats, five days a week, the assets of 4ocean probe the coast and the sea in search of dangerous waste. A sadly simple research given the high quantity of plastic present in the sea. Excluding some employees, this army is mostly made up of local volunteer cleaners. Boys, old people, workers and even tourists who regularly board the association's boats to get to work.

4ocean also owes its success to its approach aimed at solving the root problem, without excuses or intermediaries, but personally pulling up the sleeves. The will to set a good example is evidenced not only by their actions, but also by the extreme transparency in the budgets and in the disposal of the garbage collected, as well as by the desire to cooperate as much as possible with other associations dealing with "marine cleaning."

the 4 pillars of 4ocean

4 O.C.E.A.N

The name of the association is due to a play on words, obviously (for the ocean), but also to the initials of the 4 pillars that support their intervention strategy. These are:

  • Optimizing technology, which is to use the best available technologies to clean, intercept and remove the garbage present in the oceans.
  • Creating jobs, that is giving work to entire crews and captains who commit themselves full-time, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, in cleaning activities.
  • Education & Awarness, which is to educate individuals, corporations and governments about the impact that plastic has on the ocean and set an example throughout the world so as to increase awareness of the situation and push to a change in daily behavior.
  • New global economies, that is create a new economy, based on the removal of garbage, giving the plastic in the oceans an effective value.
Supporting 4ocean is simple. It can also be done economically, by purchasing one of the many products available within their e-shop or through one of the many retailers available worldwide. If instead you wish to lend a more practice hand, joining their crew, you can subscribe to their newsletter so as to stay up to date on where the next cleaning campaign will be. We close the article leaving you at this link, the official presentation video of 4ocean.
