Tecnoseal Answers - Of Cadmium and Quality


As we know, Tecnoseal produces and distributes sacrificial anodes for cathodic protection in the marine and terrestrial fields of metal structures subjected to corrosive environments such as sea, river or lake water and land.
Last week we have seen that the alloys with which the cathodic protection elements are made are the following:

  • Zinc alloy according to the standard US MIL Spec. A 18001 K
  • Aluminum alloy according to the standard US MIL Spec. A 24779 SH
  • Magnesium alloy according to the standard US MIL Spec. A 21412 SH

Let's take a closer look at the metallic and non-metallic elements contained in the various alloys.

Tecnoseal constantly check, with more daily monitoring, the full compliance of alloys with respect to the standard US MIL.
In particular, the percentage of Cadmium present in the Zinc alloy is closely monitored, since this element is one of the heavy metals whose concentration in the environment is setted by many European and international regulations implemented in their entirety by the states of the union.
What is indicated by the European regulations does not specifically refer to sacrificial anodes, but Tecnoseal, which has always stood out for its attention to the environment, controls its product in such a way that the quantities of Cadmium are such as to make the alloy compliant with the specifications and never exceed the limits specified by it.

As a quality control test of the alloy Tecnoseal has long applied the SPC (Statistical Process Control) method which provides for the use of statistical tools to observe the performance of the production process in order to detect significant changes before they result in a product under the standard.
This method allows to know in a simple way what are the percentages of Cadmium contained in the zinc alloy in order to never have production batches with heavy metal percentages outside the specification limits.
