ANODE OF THE WEEK 55
Scandinavian Type Bolt On Anodes
Have you prepared sparkling wine to celebrate? With today's Anode of the Week we end a long journey, started many months ago with the Anode of the Week 24, dedicated to the sacrificial anodes that protect your boat's hull and transom.
Before starting, however, I remind you that if you look for a list of all the articles released up to now, you can find it in this convenient index.
So today we are talking about the scandinavian type bolt-on anodes and, strangely, it will not be a very long speech. This type of products, although varying greatly in size and shape, has the same characteristics as the normal bolt-on anodes with straps of which we spoke last week here.
The only real difference is the aspect that, instead of being rounded, vaguely resembles a kind of ingot (we had seen similar ones also among the weld-on anodes). This shape seems much rougher and archaic than that of the typical anodes and, in fact, it also presents a greater hydrodynamic impact. However, this type of anodes is, as the name suggests, much requested by the Scandinavian market.
The reasons behind this preference are actually quite nebulous. It is clear that, in terms of performance, they are identical to the normal bolt-on anodes. The fact that the greater hydrodynamic resistance is not a binding feature could suggest a use in the commercial sector. Another hypothesis could be that, given the low temperatures of the waters in the Scandinavian regions and the often extreme weather conditions (especially at high latitudes), the boats have different needs and do not look too much neither to the drag nor to the effective aesthetics of the sacrificial anodes installed.
However, what was said in the previous paragraph is a supposition. The reality is probably another, that is, traditionally, the boats in that region used this type of anodes and therefore they prefer to replace them with other identical ones. On the other hand, we know well how tradition is important in the boating sector, for better or for worse.
Beyond the actual reasons for which the Scandinavian type bolt-on anodes are installed, there is no doubt that there is a big demand of them. Tecnoseal, which is always careful to satisfy the demands of its customers, can boast in its catalog an equally vast assortment of these anodes. The most requested are available in all three anodic alloys (aluminum, zinc and magnesium) while the others are still achievable both in aluminum and in zinc, with one exception (the Cod.Tec.01950).
