Standard Type Shaft Anodes
Taking a cue from the last anode of the week, dedicated to the UK Type Shaft Anodes, we decided to deepen the subject by going to see the characteristics of this particular family of sacrificial anodes dedicated to protecting the shaft of a boat and much less famous than their similar ones used on hull, rudder, propellers and engines.

To start, let's talk about the most common type of shaft anodes, what is called standard one. This, as already mentioned, deals with protecting the shaft of the boats and, therefore having to be installed on a moving cylindrical part, it is immediately clear that the most important characteristic to be evaluated, which makes the difference between a piece of quality and one that it is not, it is adherence.
Less adherence would lead the sacrificial anode not so much to fall, but to detach itself from the surface to be protected, resulting much less effective. Furthermore, the anode used must maintain this adhesion as it corrodes while remaining within the protection level. Not everyone knows that, precisely for this reason, the shaft anodes do not have a perfect circumference, but have a more flattened radius at the ends that helps them stay in contact with the metal to be protected.
The used screws are another key feature of the shaft anodes. The number of screws to be used obviously depends on the size of the piece to be installed. Moreover, the holes for closing the shaft anodes are made with a hexagonal space that is tailored to the screws to be applied. In this way the screw nut fits into the anode evenly, making it more stable and generating greater pressure on the joint.
The Standard Type Shaft Anodes of Tecnoseal have another couple of features that make them very much appreciated. The first is the rounded shape of the lighter versions which provides less hydrodynamic resistance and therefore superior functionality. The second is to be found in the interior shape, dug so as to be more manageable and to have three different points of contact. In this way, the adhesion guaranteed by the shaft anodes is increased, since the pressure does not spread over the whole surface, but concentrates on the specially chosen points.
The Standard Type Shaft Anodes of Tecnoseal are available in many different sizes, suitable for most of the standard shafts of the most common boats on the market. Up to 80 mm of internal diameter (00522) are available in zinc and magnesium while for higher footage they are made only in zinc.
