ANODE OF THE WEEK 31

Standard Type Shaft Anodes
Taking a cue from the last anode of the week, dedicated to the UK Type Shaft Anodes, we decided to deepen the subject by going to see the characteristics of this particular family of sacrificial anodes dedicated to protecting the shaft of a boat and much less famous than their similar ones used on hull, rudder, propellers and engines.
Before starting, however, I remind you that if you look for a list of all the articles released from the beginning of the year up to now, you can find it in this convenient index.

To start, let's talk about the most common type of shaft anodes, what is called standard one. This, as already mentioned, deals with protecting the shaft of the boats and, therefore having to be installed on a moving cylindrical part, it is immediately clear that the most important characteristic to be evaluated, which makes the difference between a piece of quality and one that it is not, it is adherence.
Less adherence would lead the sacrificial anode not so much to fall, but to detach itself from the surface to be protected, resulting much less effective. Furthermore, the anode used must maintain this adhesion as it corrodes while remaining within the protection level. Not everyone knows that, precisely for this reason, the shaft anodes do not have a perfect circumference, but have a more flattened radius at the ends that helps them stay in contact with the metal to be protected.

The used screws are another key feature of the shaft anodes. The number of screws to be used obviously depends on the size of the piece to be installed. Moreover, the holes for closing the shaft anodes are made with a hexagonal space that is tailored to the screws to be applied. In this way the screw nut fits into the anode evenly, making it more stable and generating greater pressure on the joint.
The Standard Type Shaft Anodes of Tecnoseal have another couple of features that make them very much appreciated. The first is the rounded shape of the lighter versions which provides less hydrodynamic resistance and therefore superior functionality. The second is to be found in the interior shape, dug so as to be more manageable and to have three different points of contact. In this way, the adhesion guaranteed by the shaft anodes is increased, since the pressure does not spread over the whole surface, but concentrates on the specially chosen points.

The Standard Type Shaft Anodes of Tecnoseal are available in many different sizes, suitable for most of the standard shafts of the most common boats on the market. Up to 80 mm of internal diameter (00522) are available in zinc and magnesium while for higher footage they are made only in zinc. An interesting feature is that in the Tecnoseal catalog you can find both the measures in meters and inches of the individual shaft anodes, a useful addition that allows to simplify the recognition of the perfect piece for your needs.
For more specific details you can refer to pages 102, 103, 104, 105 and 106 of our catalog.

ANODE OF THE WEEK 27

Anodes for Varifold Propellers
At a considerable distance from the last time we're going back to talking about anodes for shafts and propellers. On that occasion we talked about feathering propellers (to be precise both autoprop and autostream) while the anodes we will discuss today have been made to measure for the Varifold folding propellers.
Before starting, however, I remind you that if you look for a list of all the articles released from the beginning of the year up to now, you can find it in this convenient index.

Like the Autoprop propellers, the Varifold propellers are also produced by the English company Brunton's Propellers. They are sold in three variants (with two, three or four blades) as propellers suitable for all types of racing yachts, from cruisers to racing boats that use them to return to port.
In practice, the Varifold propellers can close on themselves assuming, thanks to the helical shape of the blades, a pointed shape that greatly reduces the hydrodynamic drag of the boat. For this reason they have a good reputation and are mounted on many yachts including those of the Baltic, Swan, Wally, Moody and Oyster brands.

The main advantage of the Varifold is obviously the speed they can reach once closed. However the particular shape of the blades also allows to reduce the water pressure on the hull thus reducing the vibrations and noise during their use when "open".
Speaking instead of defects, the main one is to be found in the "open" performance that, in spite of the great advantages already mentioned, are not so exceptional. If we wanted to rank all the propellers of this type, the Varifold in this category would certainly fall towards the lower parts of the list.

Like all propellers, the Varifold are also subject to massive galvanic corrosion. For this Tecnoseal has in catalog all the parts necessary for their maintenance (codes from 01035 to 01038): from the ogives for the 3 and 4 blades variants to the rings for the two blades variant. The pieces are available in zinc in various sizes, but, as usual, you can request a custom-made change to meet your needs.
